Simone White, a lawyer from the UK, passed away amid a suspected mass poisoning in Laos, in a case where four other deaths have already been confirmed by local authorities.

White was enjoying a few days of vacation in the small Southeast Asian country when she accepted three free drinks at a bar. The young Australian Bianca Jones had her death confirmed last Thursday (21), along with an American and two Danish tourists.

The alleged poisoning event took place in Vang Vieng, an area of Laos popular among backpackers due to its nightlife and adventure sports. Bethany Clarke, a friend of Simone’s, stated that a group of six people was taken to the hospital after drinking at the same bar.

Authorities in Thailand confirmed that Jones, the 19-year-old Australian, died from “brain swelling due to high levels of methanol found in her system.” Her friend, Holly Bowles, is currently in the hospital, according to the Australian prime minister.

The U.S. State Department also confirmed the death of the American, while Denmark’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that two citizens died in the “incident in Laos.”
